Why ElmerLink.com came to be:

I had a thought recently.  I thought it would be a great idea to connect people who know a lot of different things about Ham Radio with those who are just beginning or need some mentoring in facets of the hobby.  Whether beginning or advanced … we can all pool knowledge and efforts and help each other out.

I speak from my own experience of being a newly minted Ham (less than a year) and having climbed the classes to Extra for the main desire of wanting to be a VE (Volunteer Examiner) at that level and enjoy some of the extra DX to be found on 40 meters in the lower part of the band reserved for those who were Extras.    It’s been a fun journey but after I passed my first test (Technician), I was stuck with books and knowledge and very little idea about how to get started.  I was stuck.  I was dressed for the party with no where to go.

I continued to study and got my General Class ticket (still hadn’t been on the air yet) and finally decided I needed some help.  I reached out to a local Ham Club seeking help from someone who would be patient and help me pick out equipment and antennas needed for a working Ham Shack.   In a little bit of time, he had my Ham Shack up and running and I was chasing DX and using all the privileges I had earned.

So, as I begin to build this website … I have my own story in mind.

I am picturing a forum (the heart of the match), a place to list equipment for sale or trade if people want to.  A place where advertisers might like to visit and place ads or coupons.  This will be a living project.  I hope I can get various clubs involved too.

It’ll take time.  Baby steps … :)
